About Katy

I’m not a librarian. I’m not an educator. I have no formal training in book reviewing. I’m just a mom who has an advanced reader for a son. I spent many years reading one book ahead of him so when I gave him something to read, I knew it was okay content wise.  As his wise 2nd grade teacher told me, just because your 7 year old can read like an 8th grader doesn’t mean he should.   In the process, I learned there’s a world out there of books where things happen because kids believe they can or will or might – things adults would never buy into but kids will because they aren’t hampered with a mortgage or grey hair. Granted, some titles are best left with the tweens and teenagers of the world. But some, I believe, are meant to be read by those of us who still have an inner kid who refuses to grow up and loves a good story.

People say act your age; nobody says we have to read it.

Oh I love this blog…so much in common I can barely stand it!
Elsie just asked me the other day what would I save first if the house was burning– the kids or my YA books…I assured her the kids would come first( I don’t think she believed me).
A good book I recommend is The Cardturner by Louis Sachar. Refreshingly different from my last dystopian read and I still didn’t learn a thing about bridge.
These days I’m so busy I desperately wish I could read all these books by osmosis…I can’t stay ahead of all those John Green novels Elaina is reading these days!

Hello Tracy! Thank you so much! Us YA adults need to stick together (especially at midnight in Ballard!) Nate has The Cardturner on his shelf. He read it last year and said much the same thing. He liked the story but had no clue how to play the game! Thanks for the suggestion – I’ll put it in my pile (because don’t we all have a pile of ‘oh, if I only had more time’ books?) Has Elaina read Paper Towns? I’ve got that on my list to read and am curious if it’s any good.

Of the John Green books Elaina said Paper Towns was her least favorite . Her recommendation is The Fault in our Stars and Looking for Alaska. I enjoyed the abundance of Katherine’s . Have you read any Libba Bray? I loved The Diviners (the twenties time period was different) and Elaina says Going Bovine is good and weird. Elaina keeps rereading the Giver series. My all time favorite series is Fablehaven by Brandon Mull.

I loved Libba Bray’s A Great and Terrible Beauty. I have The Fault in Our Stars on my end table but haven’t brought myself to crack it open. I think I’m afraid I’ll either cry my eyes out or roll them too much. Nate read Fablehaven and loved it, too! All good suggestions! My must read list keeps growing!
